This is the News Analysis segment of the Voice of Biafra International (VOBI) broadcasts
For December 16th, 2006
You have heard the news; now, the analysis…
Fellow Biafrans:
Many of you may or may not remember another brutal African dictator called Mengistu Haile Miriam of Ethiopia who, with his cronies in his junta, murdered thousands of Ethiopians. Just this week, he was finally convicted of genocide after a trial lasting 12 years, conducted in absentia because he had run away to exile in Zimbabwe. Many members of his junta were also, or have already been, convicted of such crimes against humanity.
Criminal Mengistu is 70 years of age now. In his younger days, he arrogantly thought that youthfulness, money and power would last him forever. Like all dictators, he behaved like he owned the world and all the peoples who dwell therein, but especially, like he owned his own Ethiopian people and their world. He never stopped once to think that latter days would turn into fragile times for him—such as now; that power, wealth and vigor would desert him, like they have; and that he would be a vulnerable dependent, a frail old man latching on to any basic comforts that can be had—if he can still find them for himself. Well, today, Mengistu finds no comfort—living in fear in exile; he finds no rest either, because all he has waiting for him—all that he has to look forward to, now—for the rest of his life, is the cold, dark, lonely jail and its walls, there to contemplate in solitude on the thousands of murders he ordered and participated in. He will live out his life amid the worst of existential nightmares: he will confront the fears of every old man: loneliness, separation, solitary confinement, and total loss of freedom and loss of liberty.
Fellow Biafrans, of course you know that we are not interested in murderer-Mengistu. We only use him to foretell what is going to happen to another dictator and murderer closer to home, General Obasanjo, who, with his cronies in his own junta (like Colonel Are, Balogun, Ehindero, and a whole host of others), have participated in the killing of millions of Igbo and other Biafrans. Neither time nor age spared Mengistu: therefore, let no one think for a moment that Obasanjo and his fellow criminals will escape justice. Rather, let us have some measure of consolation in understanding that when Justice finally catches up with these men, as it must, it will strike them at their most vulnerable period of life, when it pains the most, and when it counts the most. Just like for Mengistu.
Yet, that is not consolation enough as we read to you a partial list of the latest Igbo-Biafran and MASSOB victims of Obasanjo’s orders and Nigeria’s genocidal policies carried out by the Nigeria Police and Nigeria armed units against our people, in just one criminal exercise alone, a bloody, murderous exercise being conducted right here in our own land. Almost all of the victims of this phase of Obasanjo’s ongoing killing of our people were arrested in their respective homes and taken from there to be killed and buried in unmarked mass graves.
We mourn the loss of our people. They have paid the ultimate price for their freedom and liberty—for OUR Freedom and Liberty. The Lord receive His creation and comfort the living. Biafra grieves over them—these men and women:
1. Mebisi Nwaneka
2. James Abi
3. Clement Nwite
4. Onyekachi Kalu
5. Emeka Igwe
6. JohnPaul Emeka
7. Andrew Ndubuisi
8. Eze Maduka
9. Agnes Okeke
10. Kelechi Agu
11. Madubueze Chijioke
12. Tochukwu Aka
13. Chinedu Atuka
14. Nneka Okeke
15. Chidiebere Amanna,
This, however, is only a partial list—those whose names we could recover. There are more victims in mass graves where the Nigeria Police and their proxy threw their bodies. Who could live within a structure which perpetrates this much cruelty against a targeted group? Heavens forbid! We will have Biafra, in order to put a distance between us and these heartless, bloodthirsty animals, unworthy to be called even beasts.
Nigeria crumbles by the day, now. Soon, there will be no sick and corrupt Nigeria to shield these criminals. Then, the arm of justice can reach them more easily.
Unjust imprisonment, torture and molestation of prisoners are also crimes which violate the basic human rights, and are recognized as such by the UN. The continuing imprisonment of MASSOB members, MASSOB officials, including Uchenna Madu, the Information Director of MASSOB, and especially Ralph Uwazurike, the leader of MASSOB, on Obasanjo’s orders, is such a despicable crime. We call for their immediate and unconditional release. We also call on the World to support and amplify our demand for their release at this time.
We want to take this opportunity to announce that the last of the MASSOB-53 have made bail from Nigerian jails where they have been imprisoned under the most horrendous conditions since September 2003, when they were unjustly arrested while participating in a soccer tournament. We welcome our brethren back into our midst as we continue to bring ourselves out of a so-called country which parades innocent persons captured at a soccer tournament and charges them with “Treason” and with “Intimidating the President of Nigeria.” We are committed to Biafra, and there, to Biafra, we go.
Biafra alive! Because it is God Who makes it so.
That’s the News Analysis for the week. Thank you.
